Excipients

Excipients are inactive substances used as carriers for the medication’s active ingredients. They are used when an "active" substance is not easily administered and absorbed; when it is potent and needs to be bulked up for convenient and accurate dosage; or when it needs to be stabilized. Excipients can also be used in manufacturing to aid in active substance handling. Depending on route of administration and form of medication, different excipients are used: anti-adherents, binders, coatings, fillers, flavors, colors, lubricants, preservatives, sorbents, and sweeteners.
