Sweeteners

Sweeteners are food additives which add the basic taste of sweetness to a food; artificial sweeteners and natural sweeteners are also termed ‘sugar substitutes’, often classified into nutritive and non-nutritive. They are added to keep the food energy (calories) low, to provide a sugar replacement for diabetics, and to help prevent tooth decay. In the case of high-intensity sweeteners, much less sweetener is required, as in their application in soft drinks labeled “diet” or “light”.
